Online Vocabulary Development

for Professionals

Which language in the world has the largest vocabulary and grows the fastest? English! It is said that English has over 200,000 words, and very large dictionaries such as The Oxford English Dictionary have over 500,000 word entries.

This course, offered in three parts, is designed for native English speakers and advanced non-native English speakers alike. It will help you approach the task of building your vocabulary. With an increased command of English vocabulary, you will not only expand your ability to understand what you hear and read, but also you will speak and write with greater authority.

Develop Your Vocabulary with Prefixes, Suffixes and Roots

You will learn the roots and affixes (i.e., prefixes and suffixes) that are common to the words found in academic and professional writing. You will learn to analyze a word, breaking it down into its parts. For example,

concentrate is composed of three parts:
con (prefix) + centr (root)+ ate (suffix)
con = together, totally, with
centr = middle
ate = to make

These parts can be analyzed as: "to make totally in the center." In other words, concentrate means to bring to, or direct toward, a common center; to unite more closely; to gather into one body, mass, or force; to fix into a focus; to concentrate the attention.

You will learn both the literal definition and the contextual definition of a word, that is, what the word means according to its parts, and what the word means in the context of a sentence or larger passage of writing or speech.

You will learn both the literal definition and the contextual definition of a word, that is, what the word means according to its parts, and what the word means in the context of a sentence or larger passage of writing or speech.

You will find such words in your workplace literature and in the news - and, because you are able to analyze the vocabulary, you will comprehend more!

You will also activate the vocabulary by composing sentences with the words you learn and fitting them into your work and home contexts.
