Phonics Bingo Cards
Emerging readers, learners of English as a Second Language, and even experienced readers who complain that “words aren’t pronounced the way they’re spelled” can benefit greatly from exposure to phonics–the correlations between the 40 or more sounds of the spoken language and the 26 letters of the alphabet used for spelling them. Lacking the time or resources to embark on a full course of instruction, they can acquire the major patterns of the system through pedagogically constructed games like those of Phonics Bingo.
Description
by Elaine Kirn
Phonics Bingo reinforces phonics (sound-symbol correspondence) patterns through simple and entertaining board games. Through listening and reading, these activities provide immediate feedback, motivating players to understand and then to pronounce contrasting words in a comprehensible way.
Phonics Bingo comes in four levels: Literacy, Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each level contains eight games of ten different Bingo boards and eight decks of caller cards. Four of the games contrast vowel sounds and spellings. The other four games focus on consonants: initial, final, and (at higher levels) medial.
An extensive teacher-resource book for each level includes reduced-sized copies of eight different boards, the rules of Phonics Lotto and Bingo, with suggestions for classroom variations, and a mini-phonics course for instructors and tutors. Also included are reproducible reference lists, phonics worksheets, mastery checks, and answer keys for learners.
The four levels of Phonics Bingo are progressively more challenging in number of contrasting words on a board, spelling and sound patterns, and difficulty of the vocabulary on each board. They meet or exceed standards of Common Core, ELA (English Language Acquisition), ESL (English as a Second Language) and other curriculum standards with systematic approaches to reading, pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary.
